What is a sand filter?
A sand filter is basically what it sounds like. It is a sealed, pressurised container full of fine sand. Pipes run horizontally through the filter and release pool water into the sand. The sand particles are so close together that the water and dissolved salt or chlorine can pass through but dirt, leaves, dust and other particles get trapped by the sand. The water that makes its way through the filter under pressure is free of all particles but may still contain bacteria.
The filter does not kill bacteria, that is the job of the chlorinator or pool chemicals.
What is a cartridge filter?
A cartridge filter is more like your car’s air filter or your vacuum bag. It contains tightly packed microfibres that like the sand filter, allow water and dissolved chemicals to pass through but traps particles and debris.
How do you backwash a sand filter?
About once a month the debris in your sand filter can build up to the point where even water has trouble flowing through. Backwashing runs pool water through your sand filter in the reverse direction and flushes all of the trapped particles through a waste line into the drain.
To backwash your filter:
- Turn the pump off
- Turn the multi port valve to backwash
- Run the backwash for about 2 to 3 minutes
- When you notice clear water coming out turn off the pump
- Set the multi port valve to filter
- Run your pump again as required
What do you do if you think the filter is clogged broken or not working?
